Diabetes UK is the largest organisation in the UK working for people with diabetes, funding research, campaigning and helping people live with the condition.
We have over 150,000 members. We work for people with diabetes, their carers, family and friends. We represent the interests of all people with diabetes by lobbying the government for better standards of care and the best quality of life.
Our mission is to improve the lives of people with diabetes and to work towards a future without diabetes. In order to do that Research is at the heart of what we do and in 2011 we aim to invest over £6 million in research to improve the treatment if diabetes and search for a cure.
Currently there are 200,000 adults living with diabetes in the South West and 1,665 children (0-15) with Type 1 diabetes that may require around 95,000 injections during their lifetime. In addition it is estimated a further 98,000 adults have the condition but don’t know it and these figures are set to rise dramatically over the next couple of years.
Diabetes UK South West works to support people with diabetes in various ways. We provide information and support to help people to manage their diabetes. We work with health care professionals and campaign government to ensure that the best standards of care are in place. We also fund research to improve treatment and hopefully one day we will find a cure.
Diabetes UK South West is entirely self funded and we organise a variety of fundraising events throughout the year from sponsored walks, to Santa dashes and sky dives, so we can continue to meet these needs locally.
The money raised helps everyone with diabetes from birth to twilight years and enables us to continue supporting people with diabetes and work towards a future without it
